Coin/Currency Grading and Photography Basics

Via Coins & Grading

Via Coins is committed to being a place for avid coin and paper currency collectors to buy genuine products at reasonable prices. We make no claims to be a coin grading service, any lettered grades we put on coins are simply there for customers to gauge the look of the coin or paper currency. This is why we don't accept any coins from customers asking us to grade their coins.

Over the past years coin and bill collecting has put an excessive emphasis on the grade a coin has. This type of coin grading can be very subjective and puts too high of a value on the coin. Collectors have noted taking coins between so-called big name coin grading companies and noticed different grades on the same coin. Others notice high volume and long time customers often receive higher grades than those that have just started or don't have loyalty to a company.

We do not follow in this business model nor do we put heavy emphasis on the grade of the product when determining what price it should go for. For those that really must know what the grade is, we follow the basic lettering system when determining the condition of the item.

Photography "In the right light, anything looks good"

Photography of coins and paper money is everywhere. Everyone certainly doesn't want a stock photo of a coin, with the hope that the one they receive looks like the photo online. People want the real deal, a photo of the actual product they are trying to buy. However, in this day and age, even that may be deceiving. Take a look at the four photos below, they are not doctored in any way from software. This is the same coin in every photo, not altered between shots.

All that changes here is the intensity and the direction of the lighting above. Poor lighting and bad camera angle can hide or show an imperfection on the surface of a coin, it doesn't matter how high quality the camera is.

Via Coins always take multiple photos of all the products we sell. We encourage you to look at all of them before making a purchase.

Hello and Welcome!

Welcome to our site, this is our first blog post announcing our arrival to the online coin world. First, I think we should introduce ourselves. We are Via Coins, a small team of investors, collectors and enthusiasts that enjoy coins and paper currency. Now you too are a part of our team, well... you are if you came to this page looking to buy some coins that is. Anyway, Via Coins is our name, we chose Via because Via is short and sweet. It comes from the Latin word of the same name, meaning "by way of", so you get coins by way of us. We are going to be starting our coin sale on both this website and an ebay store. Via Coins sells mainly coins, and at this time were are starting out at a slow pace to get a feel for how business will be. We are making a commitment to getting you genuine real coins, the current coins and paper money market has its fair share of fake money going around. We inspect each and every individual item that comes into our possession. At this time we are only selling coins, in the near future we hope to provide a packaging and inspection service to all our customers who want coins to be stored in a safe reliable slab.
